Nayib Bukele re-elected as El Salvador president

Although the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, had announced his reelection with more than 85% of the votes hours before, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal confirmed his victory with the first preliminary results that were published on its website.

The president of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, was the first to congratulate Nayib Bukele on his reelection, praising the democratic exercise of the Salvadoran people and expressing his intention to strengthen the ties of friendship and collaboration between both countries.

President Bukele proclaimed a record in world democratic history and announced his victory before the results of the election day were officially known, which also included legislative elections.

At 42 years old and with the need to To maintain the majority in Parliament obtained two years earlier, Bukele sought re-election to consolidate his fight against gangs and citizen insecurity.

Bukele’s re-election, supported by electoral polls and the lack of citizen support for other candidates, makes him the first re-elected president in the last 32 years.
